What You Can Save When Mold Is on Furniture
Building materials are only half the call. The other half is the sofa that was in the wet basement and the bins of photographs. You do not have to throw away a house. You also should not wipe a moldy basement sofa and carry it upstairs.

Usually salvageable
Solid wood, metal, glass, and sealed furniture can be HEPA-vacuumed and wiped with detergent, then dried. Dishes and hard decor are the same. Electronics that stayed dry can be cleaned on the outside. If they were submerged, assume they are done.
Clothing and linens that are washable should be laundered in hot water if the fabric allows, not shaken out in the kitchen.
Usually not
Wet upholstered pieces, mattresses, and particle-board furniture that swelled. The foam holds moisture and the mold is not a surface film. A 'specialty clean' that costs more than the item is a hobby, not a plan.
Papers and photos that are damp should be frozen in bags until a conservator or a careful dry-out, if they matter. Papers that are dry but smelled the basement may only need a HEPA clean somewhere other than the kitchen table. Do not blow them off with compressed air indoors.
- Hard furniture can usually be cleaned and kept.
- Wet sofas and swollen particle board usually cannot.
- Do not shake basement textiles in the living space.
