Summer Humidity and Closet Mold
Closet mold in late summer is so common in Gettysburg that people treat it like dust. It is the coolest, stillest air in the room, often on an exterior wall, full of cotton and cardboard. Air conditioning keeps the bedroom pleasant and the closet forgotten.

The pattern
You see specks on leather, shoes, or the back wall of a closet that shares a stone or brick exterior. The bedroom humidity may be fine while the closet is higher because the supply air never enters it. The door was shut all July.
This is usually a surface problem if you catch it early and the wall is not wet from a leak. Wash hard items, launder what you can, HEPA vacuum, and get conditioned or dehumidified air into the space. Find out whether the wall behind is actually wet before you blame the weather only.
What makes it come back
Trunks against the wall, garment bags with no airflow, and a door that stays shut. Leave a gap, thin the storage, and check a gauge you stick in the closet for a week. If the closet is 70 percent while the hall is 50, you have an airflow project, not a curse.
If the back of the closet drywall is soft or the baseboard is stained from below, stop the laundry-and-vinegar cycle and look for a leak or a damp foundation.
- August closets are still, cool, and full of food for mold.
- Get dry air into the closet; do not just wipe shoes.
- Soft drywall means more than humidity.
