Mold and Health: What Adams County Families Should Know

A musty house can make people feel worse. That sentence is true and it is narrower than the internet's version. This page is general information for families around Gettysburg, not medical advice and not a diagnosis of your home from a photo.

What people actually notice

The common complaints are nasal congestion, throat irritation, cough, headache, or asthma symptoms that ease when you leave the house for a day. Some of that is mold fragments. Some is dust mites, which also love damp. Some is a wet-wall smell that is bacterial as much as fungal. Pinning a specific illness on a specific patch is a physician's job, and even then it is often uncertain.

People with asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems tend to have a harder time in a damp building and during demolition. Infants and older adults deserve the same caution. If that is your household, say so when you book. It changes how careful we are about containment and whether we suggest you sleep elsewhere the day drywall comes down. It does not mean you must abandon the house tonight because a corner is stained.

Exposure is not the same as a toxin story

You will read that black mold produces mycotoxins that explain every chronic symptom. Some molds can produce mycotoxins under some conditions. That is not the same as saying the stain in a Gettysburg closet is poisoning the family. Dramatic claims sell tests. Measured moisture and a clean removal plan fix houses.

Air samples count spores. They do not measure your health. A high indoor count compared with outdoors supports the idea that the house is amplifying mold. A low count does not prove a hidden wall is fine if the meter says the drywall is wet. We treat the building evidence as the deciding evidence.

During the work

Demolition dust bothers people who were fine with a closed-up wet wall. Containment, negative air, and a closed HVAC return are how we keep that dust in one room. Wipe horizontal surfaces afterward. Wash clothes that were in the work zone. Run a dehumidifier, not a scented candle, to judge whether the odor is actually gone.

If symptoms are severe, worsening, or include trouble breathing, get medical care. Do not wait on a remediation schedule to do that.

Keep these

  • Symptoms that improve away from home are a reason to inspect, not to panic.
  • We do not diagnose illness from a spore trap.
  • Sensitive occupants should be planned for on demolition day.
  • Breathing trouble is an emergency, not a mold question.
