Children, Pets, and Mold at Home

Kids and pets spend more time on the floor, where basement dust and closet air end up. That does not mean a stained windowsill is an emergency room visit. It does mean you should not let a toddler play in a moldy crawl, and you should plan demolition day differently if the household includes an infant, an asthmatic child, or a bird.

Day to day

Keep children out of unfinished damp basements and out of any room you have closed off because of a smell. Wash hands after they help carry up storage bins that lived on a cellar floor. Pets should not sleep in the musty room you are 'not using.'

If a child is wheezing or a pet is in obvious distress, that is a medical or veterinary problem first. Remediation scheduling comes after they are safe.

On work days

The simplest plan is for sensitive people and animals to be elsewhere while drywall is coming down, even with containment. Containment reduces dust. It does not make demolition a craft hour. Ask us which rooms will be affected. We would rather over-explain the boundary than have a curious dog open a zipper door.

Afterward, wipe sills and run the dehumidifier. Do not bring the pet bed back into a room that still smells like wet plaster and call it done.

  • Keep kids and pets out of closed-off damp rooms.
  • Breathing trouble is a medical issue first.
  • Sensitive occupants should be away during demolition.
