How to Check Attics for Mold in Gettysburg During Humid Summers
Humid Adams County summers show attic problems that winter hid. You do not need to be a roofer to do a first look. You do need to stay on the joists and pick a morning before the roof deck is too hot to think.
From the hatch
Use a bright flashlight and look at the underside of the roof, especially the north side. Surface mold from condensation looks like gray or black speckling across the wood. A leak looks browner and more local, often under a valley or a flashing.
Find every bath fan duct. If it ends in the attic, you have a cause, not a mystery. Crushed or damp insulation under that duct is the confirmation.
What not to do
Do not spray bleach up at the sheathing. You will not reach a colony in the wood grain, and you may soak insulation. Do not step on the drywall ceiling between joists. If the hatch is too tight or the attic is over a finished cathedral space with no walkway, leave it.
Do not close the hatch and run a fogger in the hallway. Attic mold is not an air-freshener problem.
After you look
Write down whether the growth is widespread or in one bay, and whether the fans exit the house. Those two notes let us tell you on the phone if this is a cleaning visit or a leak-plus-cleaning visit.
If insulation is wet, the clock is the same as any water loss. Call during business hours rather than waiting for a cooler Saturday in September.
