Grading and Downspouts: The Cheapest Mold Prevention
We can clean a joist perfectly and lose the result to a downspout that dumps at the foundation. Outdoor water management is unglamorous and it beats every spray contract we have been asked to compete with.

A twenty-minute walk
After a rain, walk the house. Every downspout should discharge several feet away, not into a two-foot splash block aimed at the wall. Soil should fall away from the foundation, not form a trench against it. Window wells should not hold water like a bucket. Mulch piled a foot up the siding is a sponge with a landscaping invoice.
On narrow Gettysburg lots you may need a buried extension to reach the alley or the yard drain. That is still cheaper than a finished basement redo.
What this will not fix
A plumbing leak, a failed sump, a bath fan in the attic, or growth that is already on the drywall. Drainage prevents the next event. It does not vacuum the current one. Do both, in the sensible order: stop new water, remove what is colonized, then keep the humidity honest.
If you only have budget for one prevention step this season, make it the downspouts. We will still answer the phone if you need us. We would rather you did not.
- Walk the house in the rain before you buy more equipment.
- Short downspouts are the top repeat-mold cause we see.
- Drainage prevents the next job; it does not clean the current one.
